Gympie Winter Shelter is a community-led initiative providing a safe, warm, and welcoming environment for those experiencing homelessness during the coldest months of the year.
Recognising that winter can be a time of extreme vulnerability for people sleeping rough, a group of local churches in Gympie come together to open their doors. This collaborative effort ensures that guests have access to a warm bed, a hot meal, and a supportive
environment when they need it most.
“I had the best sleep last night because for the first time in ages I felt safe.”
— Shelter Guest, 2025
Impact & Support
As a Wesleyan Community Care project, the Gympie Winter Shelter receives comprehensive oversight to ensure it serves the community effectively. Wesleyan Community Care provides the essential infrastructure for the project by assisting in administrative support, facilitating volunteer training, and offering ongoing mentoring to local leaders and church teams.
Professional Affiliation
The shelter operates in affiliation with Stable One, a national organisation dedicated to equipping churches to support the homeless. This partnership ensures the project is grounded in proven frameworks and connects our local efforts to a wider network of support and expertise.
A Church and Community Effort
The heartbeat of the Gympie Winter Shelter is the local community. The project is powered by volunteers from local churches and the wider Gympie region who work together to provide hospitality and practical help. By combining local volunteer heart with professional administrative support, we ensure a safe haven for our neighbours during the winter season.
